The Highest Ski Resort in Europe
Val Thorens, is a beautiful place in French Alps. It is safe to say that driving to Val Thorens is an adventure, and the reason why is because it involves a seemingly infinite climb up the side of a mountain. It takes about one hour to get to the top of the mountain. But that feeling that you get when you reach the top of the mountain – you feel like you are on the top of the world, and not just a mountain.
It is important to note that Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe. If your plan is to spend a weekend there, better keep that plan for yourself, because some European people might think that you are weird, and the reason why is because Val Thorens is the kind of a place where people usually spend at least one week.
Val Thorens Is All About Skiing
Unlike many other ski resorts that have a long list of things that you can do, Val Thorens is mainly about skiing. Don’t hope for a lot of shopping and dining, because these two things are very limited. In fact, the town is mostly comprised of chalets and condos.
It is not very high on cultural history and charm, and skiing is the main reason why it was built. Also, make sure to remember that it is not easy to drive to other ski resorts from Val Thorens, but you can easily ski to them during the day though.
Val Thorens has some amazing panoramic mountain views, and that is actually an understatement. Regardless of where you are located in the resort, you are able to see over 100 peaks in Italy, Switzerland and France.
One thing that is truly beautiful about Val Thorens is that if you happen to get tired on one area, you can simply move to another one. However, make sure to get back to Val Thorens while the lifts are still running, because driving takes a couple of hours.
Even though Val Thorens truly is a magical place for skiing, it is not really known for offering a lot of family-friendly activities, but they are working hard to ensure that everyone feels welcome. There is no reason to drive to Val Thorens, unless you already have a car somewhere in Europe.
Trains are available, but the closest stop is about 37 km away from the ski resort. And once you get there, you should stay for at least four days if you want to fully explore the ski resort and everything that it has to offer.
